Critic Consensus: Song One has plenty of earnest charm, but that isn't enough to overcome its slight, familiar story.

Movie Info

Oscar(R) winner Anne Hathaway (Interstellar, Les Miserables) stars as Franny in SONG ONE, a romantic drama set against the backdrop of Brooklyn's vibrant modern-folk music scene. After Franny's musician brother Henry (Ben Rosenfield, Boardwalk Empire) is injured and hospitalized in a coma following a car accident, Franny returns home after a long estrangement and begins to use his notebook as a guide to how his life has evolved in her absence. Franny seeks out the musicians and artists Henry loved, in the course of her journey meeting James Forester (Johnny Flynn), his musical idol, whose success and fame belie a shy and private man. As a strong romantic connection develops between Franny and James, the question becomes if love can bloom even under the most adverse circumstances. The film also stars Oscar(R) winner Mary Steenburgen (The Help) and features original music composed by Jenny Lewis and Johnathan Rice.

Critic Reviews for Song One

All Critics (50) | Top Critics (20)

Despite the delicate shadings Hathaway brings to the role, Song One moves inexorably from wan to wearying.

January 29, 2015 | Rating: 1.5/4

There are no real surprises here, just lives played out quietly and succinctly under the seductive spell of music.

In her feature debut, writer/director Kate Barker-Froyland tends to tiptoe away from the dramatic high notes that audiences often crave and comes up a stanza or two short from a fulfilling resolution.

The film, like the world it's part of, remains just a little too precious, a little too self-involved, a little too insular. Instead of singing out, directly to us, it hums its little tune only to itself.

January 23, 2015 | Rating: 2.5/4

Starts off as a singularly strong slice-of-life drama before dissipating into thin air.

Anyone with the slightest allergy to emo-tinged millennial attitudinizing should steer clear.

Audience Reviews for Song One

I couldn't get into it. I watched most, but it's very long and slow moving (actually it's not long at under 90 minutes, but it feels it). It's not bad as such, but I was bored.

½

Predictable with questionable acting in places, especially from the big names. But the excellent folk soundtrack and soundtrack in general makes up for it.
